CMC CO2lloquium – Courtney Rieger

October 23, 2015 @ 1:00 am - 3:00 pm

Title: Communicating Climate Change: Making Connections across Multiple Disciplines

Speaker: Courtney Rieger

Can OpenStreetMap as citizen science software that engages the global community, be used as a mechanism to communicate the impacts of climate change? If so, can its contribution to disaster preparedness, increase the adaptability of vulnerable communities?

Courtney’s conceptual framework includes defining climate change, vulnerability, adaptation, disaster and risk preparation and response, as well as citizen science. The natural disasters she places focus on are climate induced, specifically tropical cyclones and storm surges. She also has a case study review to support the methodology of her research proposal.

The case study being used is a review of the Nepal earthquakes that happened earlier this year.

Courtney will provide some observations as a dotted line to mitigation and policy recommendations, as they are very much a part of adaptation. The presentation will be about 45 minutes with lots of time for feedback and questions.
